About NUMU and its Exhibitions:

Founded in 1965, New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU), formerly the Museums of Los Gatos, is a public non-profit art and history museum located in the Civic Center Plaza in Los Gatos. NUMU's mission is to engage its community at the intersection of art, history and education through innovative, locally connected and globally relevant exhibitions, programs, and experiences.

NUMU is committed to exhibit, educate, collect, and provide scholarship relative to Los Gatos history as well as visual arts focusing on arts and artists located in the Greater Bay Area region (Monterey, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda, San Francisco, Contra Costa, Marin, Solano, Napa, and Sonoma Counties). NUMU offers a diverse range of art and history exhibitions and educational programs. It is a remarkable, yet accessible, and welcoming institution that serves as a cultural, collaborative, and educational hub for the community.

NUMU’s art exhibitions represent artists and artworks that address various social and environmental issues, and other diverse themes in a variety of mediums. Artists and guest curators may propose solo or group exhibitions that hold significance to the Museum’s mission and its vision of offering equal and equitable representation and access, opportunities, and services to all stakeholders. Exhibitions representing a diversity of genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and backgrounds are encouraged. Exhibiting artists or artwork must have a significant connection to this region.  

NUMU’s history exhibitions have both strong regional ties and a broader intellectual reach that foster a sense of civic pride while providing visitors to the area with insight about Los Gatos and the surrounding communities. By telling stories of the town, our history exhibitions offer a place for children and adults to attain a deeper understanding and appreciation of its history, and the individuals and groups who laid the foundations of their communities and built their lives and legacies in Los Gatos and the surrounding areas. Exhibitions representing untold or under-told stories of historically marginalized and underrepresented peoples of Los Gatos and the Greater Bay Area are highly encouraged.

Potential exhibiting artists and guest curators who are unfamiliar with NUMU’s exhibitions or gallery spaces are encouraged to visit the museum and review previous exhibitions online prior to submitting a proposal.

In general, we solidify exhibitions in the museum two to three years in advance. When crafting exhibition proposals, this timeline should be taken into account. Scheduling and duration are at the discretion of the museum.

Selection Process and Criteria: 

Proposals are reviewed semi-annually by NUMU’s Curatorial Committee, made up of exhibition staff and board members.  

All proposed exhibitions should be aligned with NUMU’s mission and vision. 

The following are examples of criteria that will be used by the Curatorial Committee in evaluating proposals:  

Does this exhibition:

• present an opportunity to have important conversations about important issues with our audience?
• feature relevance to Los Gatos and/or the Greater Bay Area?
• present an opportunity to expand our audience into the Greater Bay Area?
• present aesthetically or historically rigorous work?
• offer collaboration on fundraising and sponsorship?
• offer something new to be seen and taught that has not been examined recently by a similar exhibition featured at NUMU? (We strive for diverse art styles, various cultures, media, as well as relevant and challenging ideas.) 
• present an exciting and engaging opportunity for NUMU? 
• Can the demands of the exhibition be met by the museum’s resources and available staff?

Please do not call or email regarding the status of your submission. If interested, a curatorial representative will contact you with next steps. Due to the volume of proposals we receive and the frequency of review, notifications may take up to six months. 

If Selected, NUMU Will Provide:

• Gallery space and design for a designated period of time.
• Marketing and promotion.
• Installation/de-installation.
• Display and archive exhibition images on NUMU’s website.
• Coordination of artwork/artifact shipment.
• Insurance for artwork/artifacts.
• Educational programs facilitation in coordination with the museum’s Education Department.
• Partnership on funding and sponsorship opportunities.

New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) invites high school students across Santa Clara County to submit an original artwork responding to the theme: What We Carry. We invite you to consider the many things you hold, from the mundane to the metaphorical. Submissions are open through January 31, 2027.

The objects you keep tell a story about your history, circumstances, and aspirations. While some items serve functional roles in our daily lives, others hold symbolic or sentimental value, like heirlooms and keepsakes. How do these physical objects connect us to our history and to one another? 

Oftentimes the most significant things we carry are intangible. We carry our emotions, ideas, beliefs, experiences, and memories. We carry the work of being human. Whether physical or abstract, we have the choice to share or obscure what we carry. Our environment, experiences, and emotions can influence what we choose to make public or keep private. What compels us to decide what is visible or what is hidden?  

As we grow, so does our relationship with what we hold on to. Things that once felt necessary might now feel like a burden or irrelevant. Something overlooked or discarded could now be something worth holding on to. What will you carry into adulthood and what will you let go of?

There may be things you never asked to carry, from personal obligations to societal obstacles. With thoughtful examination of what is carried personally and collectively, we can explore new depths of insight, empathy, and curiosity. 

We encourage artists to reflect on all the ways in which they find themselves represented in what they carry. Artists are welcome to respond to some or all aspects of this theme. What do you carry, and what does it reveal about who you are? We reside in a framework shaped by countless external forces, whether they’re social, cultural, or environmental. Over time, we form patterns of belief and behavior that are passed from person to person. They are shaped by our habits, heritage, memories, surroundings, and historical events. What do they reveal about our society? How have they shaped who we are? 

ArtNow 2027 submissions will open Sunday, November 1st, 2026, and close on Sunday, January 31, 2027, at 11:59 PM. 

 SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• Students may submit one work of art. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.
• A fully completed submission form and an artist statement of no more than 100 words must accompany the artwork. Submissions accepted online only.
• Must be a Santa Clara County High School student. Public, private, and homeschoolers are all welcome to apply.
• Create an original work of art in response to this year’s theme, and write an accompanying artist’s statement.
• Artwork is accepted in the following categories: Drawing, Digital Art, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, & Video/Animation.
• By submitting to ArtNow you allow NUMU to use images of your artwork for promotional purposes. 

IMAGE UPLOAD REQUIREMENT

• All files must be labeled as follows "Artist Last Name_ Artist First Name_Artwork Title" (Doe_Jane_TreeOfLife.jpg, for example)
• Images must be in .jpg format. jpg, mp4, mov, and m4v files are accepted.
• Images should be sized at a minimum of 1250 pixels on the shortest side with an image quality of at least 300 DPI.
• Final .jpg file must be less than 5 MB.
• Video/Animation submissions must be 2 minutes or shorter, and exported as .mp4. Short .gif files must be looped and exported to follow Video/Animation requirements.
• An individual artwork with multiple components (diptych, triptych, series) will be considered as one submission and must be submitted as a composite (single) file.
• If you are submitting a 3D artwork you may upload a single image collage with up to 3 angles of your work. 
• Judges will use this image to judge your artwork. Ensure that it is rotated and sized according to the way you want the judges to view your piece. 
• If your artwork is accepted we will use this image in the exhibition catalog. Please ensure that your image is high quality: no glare, well lit, cropped to include your full artwork, and at least 300 DPI 

JUDGING CRITERIA

Submissions are accepted based on the following criteria:

• Significant and thoughtful investigation of the theme
• Imaginative communication of ideas
• Meaningful use of materials
• Demonstrates technical skill and artistic merit
• Artist statement is well-articulated

FAQs

Is there a size restriction for my original (physical) piece? 

 There are no size restrictions.

How many pieces can I submit? 

 Each student may only submit one work in the category of their choice.

Can I make a change or correction to my submission? 

Unfortunately, no. Once the form has been submitted, there will be no opportunity to edit. Please make sure all files and information are correct before submitting.

Can I add to my artwork after I have been accepted as an exhibiting artist? 

Making changes to the artwork may jeopardize artwork, as it was judged in the original state it was submitted. Slight modifications such as varnishing a painting or fixing something that has broken are acceptable and encouraged.

When will I know if my work was accepted into the exhibition? 

Accepted artists will be announced on February 28, 2025.

When will I need to drop off my artwork to NUMU? 

Students whose artwork is juried into the exhibition will need to drop off their artwork during museum open hours March 19-21 & 26-27, 2027. All artworks need to be received ready-to-be-installed and properly wrapped.  Exhibiting artists will be emailed detailed information on the drop-off process and artwork preparation requirements.

How long will my artwork be on display? 

Works will be displayed from April 9, 2027 to July 18, 2027. 

 However, works will remain at NUMU from the time of drop-off (March 19-21 & 26-27, 2027), to the scheduled pick-up dates (August 2027).

Can I submit a piece in collaboration with another student?

          No, ArtNow only accepts individual submissions.

Can I use AI in my submission?

          NUMU acknowledges that AI (artificial intelligence) is now a part of media and may be used as an artistic tool. AI-generated submissions without major artistic manipulation will not be accepted. AI may be applied meaningfully as part of an artist’s process to express an original concept conceived by the artist. If AI is included, students should acknowledge that in their artist statement.

AI should not be used to write your artist’s statement, however, proofreading tools like Grammarly may be used to refine the artist’s own words. Please reach out if you have any specific questions.

NUMU strongly advises against waiting until the last minute to submit an application. There are many components to the form, and students will be most successful when they have adequate time to complete the submission.

A menudo, las cosas más significativas que llevamos con nosotros son intangibles. Cargamos con nuestras emociones, ideas, creencias, experiencias y recuerdos. Llevamos a cuestas la tarea de ser humanos. Ya sean físicos o abstractos, tenemos la opción de compartir o de ocultar aquello que llevamos.  REQUISITOS DE ENVÍO

• Los estudiantes pueden presentar una obra de arte. No se considerarán envíos tardíos o incompletos.
• La obra de arte debe ir acompañada de un formulario de envío completo y una declaración del artista de no más de 100 palabras. Se aceptan envíos solo en línea.
• Debe ser un estudiante de la escuela secundaria del condado de Santa Clara. Los estudiantes públicos, privados y que educan en el hogar pueden postularse.
• Crea una obra de arte original en respuesta al tema de este año y escribe una declaración del artista adjunta.
• Se aceptan obras de arte en las siguientes categorías: Dibujo, arte digital, técnica mixta, pintura, fotografía, grabado, escultura y vídeo/animación.
• Al enviar a ArtNow, permite que NUMU utilice imágenes de su obra de arte con fines promocionales.

REQUISITO DE CARGA DE IMAGEN

• Si se acepta su obra de arte, utilizaremos esta imagen en el catálogo de la exposición. Asegúrese de que su imagen sea de alta calidad: sin reflejos, bien iluminado, recortado para incluir la obra de arte completa y al menos 300 DPI

¿Existe alguna restricción de tamaño para mi pieza original (física)?

            No hay restricciones de tamaño.

¿Cuántas piezas puedo enviar?

            Cada estudiante sólo podrá presentar una obra en la categoría de su elección.

¿Puedo hacer un cambio o corrección a mi envío?

            Desafortunadamente, no. Cuando se haya enviado el formulario, no habrá oportunidad de editarlo. Asegúrese de que todos los archivos y la información sean correctos antes de enviarlos.

¿Puedo añadir a mi obra de arte después de haber sido aceptado como artista expositor?

            Realizar cambios en la obra de arte puede poner en peligro la obra de arte, ya que se juzgó en el estado original en que se envió. Pequeñas modificaciones como barnizar un cuadro o arreglar algo que se ha roto son aceptables y recomendables.

¿Cuándo sabré si mi obra fue aceptada en la exposición?

            Los artistas aceptados se anunciarán el 26 de febrero de 2027.

¿Cuándo tendré que dejar mi obra de arte en NUMU?

            Los estudiantes cuyas obras de arte formen parte del jurado en la exposición deberán dejarlas durante el horario de apertura del museo 19 - 21, 26 + 27 de marzo de 2027. Todas las obras de arte deben estar listas para instalar y envueltas adecuadamente. Los artistas expositores recibirán por correo electrónico información detallada sobre el proceso de entrega y los requisitos de preparación de las obras de arte.

¿Cuánto tiempo estará mi obra de arte en exhibición?

            Las obras se mostrarán desde el 9 de abril de 2027 al 18 de julio de 2027. Sin embargo, las obras permanecerán en NUMU desde el momento de entrega (9 - 21, 26 + 27 de marzo) hasta las fechas de recogida previstas (en agosto de 2027).

¿Puedo enviar una pieza en colaboración con otro estudiante?

         No, Arte ahora sólo acepta envíos individuales.

¿Puedo usar IA en mi envío?

         NUMU reconoce que la IA (inteligencia artificial) ahora forma parte de los medios y puede utilizarse como herramienta artística. Envíos generados por IA sin mayor manipulación artística no serán aceptados. La IA puede aplicarse de manera significativa como parte del proceso de un artista para expresar un concepto original concebido por el artista. Si se incluye IA, los estudiantes deben reconocerlo en su declaración de artista.

No se debe usar la IA para escribir su declaración de artista; sin embargo, se pueden usar herramientas de revisión como Grammarly para refinar las propias palabras del artista. Comuníquese con nosotros si tiene alguna pregunta específica.

YÊU CẦU TẢI LÊN HÌNH ẢNH

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Tôi có thể gửi bao nhiêu tác phẩm nghệ thuật?

            Mỗi học sinh chỉ được phép nộp một tác phẩm nghệ thuật ở một loại trung bình.

Tôi có thể thay đổi hoặc chỉnh sửa nội dung gửi của mình không?

Không. Khi biểu mẫu đã được gửi, học sinh sẽ không có cơ hội chỉnh sửa. Vui lòng đảm bảo tất cả các tập tin và thông tin đều chính xác trước khi gửi.

Tôi có thể thêm vào tác phẩm nghệ thuật của mình sau khi được chấp nhận là nghệ sĩ triển lãm không?

            Việc thay đổi tác phẩm có thể gây nguy hiểm cho tác phẩm nghệ thuật vì nó được đánh giá ở trạng thái ban đầu khi được gửi. Những sửa đổi nhỏ như đánh vecni một bức tranh hoặc sửa chữa thứ gì đó bị hỏng đều được chấp nhận và khuyến khích.

Khi nào tôi cần gửi tác phẩm nghệ thuật của mình đến NUMU?

            Những sinh viên có tác phẩm nghệ thuật được đưa vào triển lãm sẽ phải mang tác phẩm của mình đến trong giờ mở cửa của bảo tàng Ngày 19–21 & 26–27 tháng 3 năm 2027. Tất cả các tác phẩm nghệ thuật cần phải được nhận ở trạng thái sẵn sàng để lắp đặt và được bọc đúng cách.  Các nghệ sĩ tham gia triển lãm sẽ được gửi qua email thông tin chi tiết về quy trình gửi tác phẩm và các yêu cầu chuẩn bị tác phẩm nghệ thuật.

Tác phẩm nghệ thuật của tôi sẽ được trưng bày trong bao lâu?

            Tác phẩm sẽ được trưng bày từ ngày 9 tháng 4 năm 2027 đến ngày 18 tháng 7 năm 2027. Tuy nhiên, các tác phẩm sẽ vẫn ở NUMU kể từ thời điểm giao đồ (Ngày 19–21, 26–27 tháng 3 năm 2027), cho đến ngày nhận đồ theo lịch trình (Tháng 8 năm 2027).

Tôi có thể gửi một tác phẩm cộng tác với một sinh viên khác không?

         Không, ArtNow chỉ chấp nhận bài nộp của cá nhân.

Tôi có thể sử dụng AI trong bài gửi của mình không?

         NUMU thừa nhận rằng AI (trí tuệ nhân tạo) hiện là một phần của phương tiện truyền thông và có thể được sử dụng như một công cụ nghệ thuật. Các bài gửi do AI tạo ra mà không cần thao tác nghệ thuật lớn sẽ không được chấp nhận. AI có thể được áp dụng một cách có ý nghĩa như một phần trong quá trình nghệ sĩ thể hiện ý tưởng ban đầu do nghệ sĩ nghĩ ra. Nếu AI được đưa vào, sinh viên nên thừa nhận điều đó trong tuyên bố nghệ sĩ của mình.

Không nên sử dụng AI để viết tuyên bố của nghệ sĩ, tuy nhiên, các công cụ hiệu đính như Grammarly có thể được sử dụng để tinh chỉnh lời nói của chính nghệ sĩ. Vui lòng liên hệ nếu bạn có bất kỳ câu hỏi cụ thể nào.
